Story vs. Plot

Story

  • Is a series of connected events that tells what happened.

  • Has a beginning, middle, and maybe an end.

  • Follows the logical progression of this happened, then that happened, then that happened, etc.

  • Tells you what happened, giving equal weight to all the events in the sequence.

Plot

  • Is a series of connected events that tells what happened and why.

  • Has a beginning, middle, and end.

  • May use different structures to show what happened.

  • Shows you what happened in a series of scenes.  It's presented the way the author chooses to present it. May leave out or give light weight to incidents deemed less important
